M Subbiah

Abstract:

The Nāṭyaśāstra, attributed to Bharata Muni, is a foundational text in the study and practice of Indian theatre, providing comprehensive guidelines for the creation, execution, and performance of drama. This research paper delves into the technical aspects of Bharata Muni's Nāṭyaśāstra, focusing specifically on the detailed instructions related to the making of costumes, makeup, accessories, and the use of weapons in theatrical performances. Through a close examination of the text, the paper explores how these elements contribute to the overall theatrical experience, emphasizing their symbolic, emotional, and functional roles. It also examines the philosophical underpinnings of Bharata Muni’s directions, which are rooted in the concept of rasa—the emotional flavor of the performance. By revisiting the ancient methods of crafting masks, creating accessories, and handling stage weapons, the paper demonstrates how these elements are integral to the creation of illusion, characterization, and emotional resonance in performance. Additionally, the paper offers insights into the practical application of these principles in contemporary theatre practices, illustrating their enduring relevance. Through this research, the paper aims to highlight the profound impact of the Nāṭyaśāstra on both traditional and modern theatre, underscoring its continued importance as a vital resource for performance practitioners.
