The Dasai dance, a vibrant tribal tradition of the Santhals in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, once thrived under the royal patronage of the Bhanja kings. Rooted in spiritual devotion to the Goddess symbolizing supreme strength, this dance served as both worship and cultural celebration. Historically performed at the grand Lion Gate of the royal palace during the five-day Dussehra festival, it combined lively music, colorful attire, and a deep communal spirit. However, with the end of the princely state era, royal support vanished, leading to the gradual decline of Dasai. Modern influences, especially film music, have further eroded the dance's authenticity. Despite efforts by local communities, the lack of formal protection or promotion endangers the survival of this rich cultural expression. This paper explores the origins, evolution, and current challenges of the Dasai dance and calls for urgent measures to preserve this endangered heritage.
