The role of higher education in national development is well recognized by all countries of the world. Here at this level of education provides upper level man powers like doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, and scientists etc. who build the nation. Therefore quality assurance in higher education is always considered as a most important issue. In India there is a massive expansion of higher education in the post-independence era. Along with its expansion the Government of India equally gives priority to quality maintenance in the higher education system. With this objective the University Grant Commission who governs the higher education in India established National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1994. Assam is the largest state of North- East India. The growth of higher education in this region is important to achieve the goal of develop India. Although there is expansion of higher education in Assam too in the post independence period but there is a strong concern from different stakeholders regarding quality maintenance in higher education. The critics have argued that the skill of graduates and post graduates produced by our colleges and universities do not match the needs and expectations of the present day situation. In such a situation, the teachers in the higher education will have to take a pro-active role so far as the quality maintenance in the higher education institutions are concerned. In this paper we will try to give a brief view of higher education system in Assam and also try to highlight the corresponding role of the teachers in quality assurance in higher education of Assam.
