Sashikanta Barik

Abstract:

The Mahā-Purāṇas, a significant corpus within the ancient Indian literary tradition, serve as a critical source for understanding the historical and cultural landscape of ancient India. This paper explores the historical elements embedded within the Mahā-Purāṇas, analyzing their role as both historical records and cultural narratives that have shaped Indian identity over millennia. By examining the chronological frameworks, genealogies, and socio-political events depicted in these texts, this study highlights the Purāṇas contribution to reconstructing ancient Indian history and time scales. Furthermore, the research delves into the Purāṇas' role in preserving cultural values, religious practices, and philosophical ideas, solidifying their status as pillars of Indian history and culture. Through a comprehensive analysis, this paper aims to underscore the Mahā-Purāṇas significance as a bridge between myth and history, offering invaluable insights into India's rich historical and cultural heritage.
