The Mahā-Purāṇas, a significant corpus within the ancient Indian literary tradition, serve as a critical source for understanding the historical and cultural landscape of ancient India. This paper explores the historical elements embedded within the Mahā-Purāṇas, analyzing their role as both historical records and cultural narratives that have shaped Indian identity over millennia. By examining the chronological frameworks, genealogies, and socio-political events depicted in these texts, this study highlights the Purāṇas contribution to reconstructing ancient Indian history and time scales.
