Abstract:

This study explores the characteristics of magical realism in the works of Polish artist Tomek Sitowski, focusing on how his visual art blends imaginative elements with realistic representation. Structured into four chapters, the research begins with an overview of the problem, significance, and objectives, establishing the relevance of magical realism in contemporary visual arts. The second chapter develops a theoretical framework, analyzing global concepts and techniques of magical realism and their manifestation in Sitowski’s works. The third chapter outlines the methodology, employing a descriptive-analytical approach to examine three of Sitowski’s artworks created between 2000 and 2008 in Europe. The final chapter presents key findings and conclusions. Sitowski’s art is characterized by hybrid forms, dreamlike imagery, and surreal symbolism rooted in myth and the unconscious, embodying dualities like reality and fantasy, presence and absence. Despite employing traditional oil painting techniques, his work reflects a postmodern vision that challenges logical interpretations. The study concludes that Sitowski’s unique visual language contributes meaningfully to the discourse on magical realism in art. It emphasizes the necessity of further research in this area and offers insights valuable to scholars, artists, and academic institutions concerned with contemporary artistic movements and the evolving language of visual expression.
