Abstract:

Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj (1909–1968) was a revered spiritual leader, saint, freedom fighter, and poet from Maharashtra, whose contributions to Indian literature and society remain monumental. His literary and social reform work was deeply intertwined with music, especially the bhajan, ovi and abhang traditions that flourished in Maharashtra’s devotional culture. Tukdoji Maharaj recognized music not merely as an artistic expression but as a powerful medium to convey spiritual truths, ignite social reform and cultivate moral and national consciousness. The musical dimension of his literature elevates it from mere textuality to a living, performative tradition that continues to resonate with people across generations. He composed in Marathi and Hindi addressing the common people in their spoken language, making spiritual and ethical knowledge accessible. However, unlike many earlier saints, his work was deeply embedded in the context of 20th century Indian nationalism, Gandhian reformism, and rural upliftment. Music plays an important role in his literature; his literature cannot be imagined without it. Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj’s literature indeed emphasizes the significance of word music, particularly in his devotional compositions. His use of rhythm, rhyme and melody in bhajans and other compositions helped to convey spiritual and moral messages effectively. The musical quality of his words made his teachings more accessible, memorable and impactful, allowing them to resonate with a wider audience. Music, particularly devotional music, was his primary mode of communication. His most famous literary work, Gramgeeta, is a philosophical treatise on rural reconstruction and national regeneration. While not entirely in musical form, its rhythm and phrasing are imbued with poetic and musical qualities, making it suitable for public recitation and musical performance. Much of his other work, however, directly takes the form of songs - especially bhajans, which were sung during his discourses and spiritual gatherings.
