In the current scenario, environmental ethics has become a subject of supreme importance as it nurtures both moral values and duties that humans must have towards nature. The idea of environmental ethics emphasises the relationship between humans and nature. From ancient times, Indian tradition has taught us to always value the ethical relationship between human beings and the natural environment. Ancient people have associated and worshipped forests, rivers, mountains and animals with Gods and Goddesses. However, it is highly evident how humans have intervened in nature and have caused severe damage to it and jeopardised the existing harmony of the ecosystem. Numerous writers in Indian English Literature have effectively depicted nature in their works not only to show the significance of Indian culture, religion and value system, but also the interdependence between humans and nature. These works effectively reflect the ethos and sympathetic understanding of nature. Through a critical study of select literary works, the paper aims to create awareness and impart knowledge to become more sincere and responsible for helping prevent damage to the ecosystem and contribute towards sustainable development and a better quality of life. It explores possibilities of ethical evaluation of human responsibility towards our environment, of which we too are an integral part.
